The 7th Special Forces Group moves to Eglin Air Force Base
The Army’s 7th Special Forces Group is moving to Eglin Air Force Base and Duke Field. The 7th Special Forces Group is an operational unit of the U.S. Army Special Forces. It was activated May 20, 1960, based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, its current headquarters.
On November 20, 2008, Air Force officials signed a record of decision to relocate the 7th Special Forces Group to Eglin Air Force Base. In order to make this move possible, Eglin Air Force Base began construction on more than 5 million square feet of buildings and hard surfaces. The developments, which will cost about $382 million, is scheduled to run through 2011.
New construction features the creation of a new headquarters and training compound in the Eglin Reservation. The main complex for the 7th SFG is located about four miles west of Duke Field, and 12 miles north of Eglin’s main base. There are about 2,200 soldiers in the 7th Army unit, which includes a headquarters staff and five battalions that are each about the equivalent of one Air Force squadron.
Eglin is preparing to welcome the Special Forces, as they move to Eglin AFB. This means about 4,000 family members will PCS to the Emerald Coast and Northwest Florida region surrounding Eglin Air Force Base.
